Sue Bird was named the Managing Director of Team USA last week and held her introductory press conference on May 8. Black Rosie Media was on hand to cover the event, and we asked her what the biggest transition would be from being a point guard to an executive.
She discussed her experience working as an executive for the NBA’s Denver Nuggets during the 2018-2019 campaign, mentioning that she used what she learned in that role back with the Storm.
“I’ve never been in the seat, but I have a ton of experience in other ways that other people who could’ve been in the seat might not have had. So, just trying to really bring that, and again, lean on those that have been here. Really try to lean on that and understand that yes, I am a big part of these decisions, but I’m not the only part of these decisions.”
After the presser, Sue stayed to answer more questions, earning praise from another Team USA legend.
“Anytime that she’s a part of anything, I love it,” Breanna Stewart told the media after Liberty practice on May 8. “Excited for her to continue to uplift what we do at USA Basketball.”
As Team USA prepares to compete in the 2026 World Cup, Bird will have some big decisions to make.
