PWHL Playoff Breakdown, Upsets, and the Caroline Harvey Sweepstakes | At Even Strength (Ep 5.2)

Get the sharpest perspective on the PWHL playoffs and the biggest storylines in women’s hockey with this episode of At Even Strength—your essential listen from Black Rosie Media.

This Week: Playoff Seedings, Upsets & Draft Drama

With the playoff seedings set, Erica L. Ayala & Rachel Donner digs into Montreal’s headline-making choice of Minnesota as their opponent, and what it could mean for Boston, Ottawa, and the rest of the Walter Cup chase.

The conversation heats up with detailed game analysis, including Boston’s narrow Game 1 win over Ottawa, goaltending duels, and the impact of penalty chaos—23 minutes worth for Boston alone.

On Saturday, Ottawa evened the series 1-1. At Even Strength will record again on Wednesday to recap Game 2 of Montreal vs Minnesota, including yet another 5-minute major and game misconduct. The guilty party is once again Britta Curl from the Frost.

We've already seen one single game suspension in the playoffs, Rylind MacKinnon missed Game 2 after a head shot on Gabbie Hughes.

It's not hard to imagine given Curl's history that she'll be suspended AT LEAST one game. A fine seems more than appropriate as well.

Coaching Insights and Player Spotlights

Don’t miss insights from Carla Macleod, freshly back behind the Ottawa bench, and hear postgame reactions from Boston’s Jamie Lee Rattray and Alina Mueller on playoff intensity and seizing big moments.

If you love breakdowns that go beyond the box score, you’ll get the inside edge on:

  • Why special teams and physical play are deciding factors this postseason

  • How coaching strategies shift when rotations are affected by penalties

  • Key performances from clutch players: Jocelyn Larocque, Jesse Eldridge, Emily Clark, Britta Curl, and more

Montreal vs. Minnesota: A Risky Matchup

Why did Montreal pick two-time champs Minnesota for their bracket? Rachel Donner explains the strategic move based on regular season dominance—and what history says about betting against the Frost in the playoffs.

We discuss players we think will be key players and X-factors, and why Victoire vets like Marie-Philip Poulin, Laura Stacey, and Ann-Renée Desbiens could tip the scales.

The Caroline Harvey Sweepstakes & Draft Watch

As the regular season ends, the draft lottery shakes out—with Vancouver scoring the top pick and a loaded field led by Team USA stars Caroline Harvey, Laila Edwards, and Abby Murphy.

We examine what each expansion team needs to level up and how this year’s draft could impact team defense, offense, and special teams for years to come.
