NEW YORK LIBERTY’S CHAMPIONSHIP JOURNEY: WHAT’S NEXT? 🗽🏀

NOTE: This is a summary of our October 20, 2025 podcast

On Monday, we celebrated the first anniversary of New York Liberty Day, a celebration of the first-ever WNBA title in the Liberty franchise's history! 🥳

As we celebrate the Liberty's historic first championship, we also take a deep dive into the state of the team, their offseason moves, and what lies ahead for the 2025 season.

With a mix of thrilling highs and pressing questions, this is a pivotal moment for the Liberty and their fans.

Let’s break it all down.

A Year to Remember: Reflecting on 2024

Last year was a transformative year for the Liberty. It marked their first-ever WNBA championship, a moment of pure joy for the team and its devoted fanbase. From the electric atmosphere at Barclays Center to the parade through New York City streets, the celebrations encapsulated decades of hope and perseverance. As Brian Florentine put it, “It was a nonstop party that felt like quintessential New York vibes.”

Despite the triumph, the 2025 season revealed gaps and challenges. Injuries to key players like Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart, combined with inconsistent team chemistry, left fans and analysts alike questioning what went wrong.

Could deeper roster adjustments or coaching changes have made a difference? That’s where the conversation turns next.

Leadership in Flux: A Coaching Change

The Liberty made headlines by parting ways with head coach Sandy Brondello after the 2025 season. While Brondello led the team to their first championship, General Manager Jonathan Kolb explained the move as forward-thinking.

"This decision was not punitive or reactive but rooted in the need for evolution and innovation," Kolb stated.

Kolb emphasized the league’s rapid evolution, noting that tactics and strategies from 2024 were no longer sufficient to compete in 2025. While continuity is often a catalyst for success, Kolb believes that adapting to the league’s changing dynamics is key to sustaining long-term competitiveness.

Still, the decision has sparked debate among fans and analysts. Was letting go of Brondello a bold move for growth, or a gamble that could backfire?

The Core Three: Staying or Splitting?

A major question heading into 2025 is the future of the Liberty’s “Core Three”: Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu. Kolb expressed confidence that all three stars want to return, but with almost the entire roster set to hit free agency under a new CBA, nothing is guaranteed.

  • Breanna Stewart: The ultimate Swiss Army knife of basketball, Stewie’s versatility and leadership remain the bedrock of the Liberty’s championship aspirations.

  • Jonquel Jones: Despite battling injuries, JJ proved her value as a dynamic force in the paint. Can the Liberty maximize her talents in 2025?

  • Sabrina Ionescu: The face of the franchise, Sabrina’s role and usage remain a topic of debate. Should she be the primary point guard, or does she thrive better as an off-ball shooter?

Kolb acknowledged the need to find the right backcourt partner for Sabrina.

"We didn’t solve the off-ball production opportunities with Tosh in ways that were conducive to creating success for Sabrina," he admitted.

This leaves fans wondering: Who is the perfect fit to complement Ionescu?

The Evolution of WNBA Basketball

The WNBA is evolving at a breakneck pace, and Kolb is acutely aware of the changes. From three-point shooting to physicality on defense, the league’s style of play is shifting. "We need to be more adaptable, more innovative," Kolb emphasized. The Liberty’s ability to adjust will define their future success. One glaring issue from 2025 was the team’s struggle with physicality, particularly in the playoffs. Kolb highlighted the need for improved spacing and toughness, saying, “The scouting report on us is to be incredibly physical. We need to absorb that better and respond.”

Who Will Lead the Liberty Next?

With the coaching seat vacant, speculation is swirling about potential candidates. Names like Kristi Tolliver, Teresa Weatherspoon, and Sonia Roman have been floated, but the Liberty must tread carefully.

The next head coach will need to balance the team’s current strengths while integrating fresh strategies to stay ahead of the league’s curve. The question of WNBA experience in a head coach has become a focal point. While Kolb stated his intention to cast a wide net, fans are divided. Is NBA experience enough, or should the next coach have proven success in the WNBA? The choice will undoubtedly shape the team’s trajectory.

Is the Championship Window Still Open?

This is perhaps the most pressing question for Liberty fans. While the core talent is undeniable, the success of the next few seasons hinges on key decisions in coaching, roster construction, and player development. Brian Fleurantin argues that as long as Stewie is on the roster, the Liberty remain contenders. "As long as Breanna Stewart is breathing, her team is a championship contender." However, Erica Ayala warns that the wrong coaching hire could close the window prematurely. Looking Ahead: Free Agency and the Future The offseason brings a rare opportunity for the Liberty and the league as a whole. With a new CBA looming and a massive free-agent pool, the moves made in the coming weeks will set the tone for years to come. Kolb described this moment as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many franchises.” For the Liberty, the path forward is clear: find the right coach, retain the core three, and build a roster that can withstand the physical and strategic demands of an evolving WNBA. Easier said than done, but if any team has the resources and ambition to pull it off, it’s New York. What Do You Think? Do you think the Liberty’s championship window is still open? Who should be the next head coach, and what roster moves should the team prioritize? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. Here’s to a thrilling offseason and an even brighter 2025!
